Blackwater Falls gives this state park its name, and a visit to the cascade makes it clear why the waterfall is the centerpiece of the property. There are a couple overlook areas that require walking up and down some steps to the edge of the water. There are even some views from the parking area off the side of the main park road. Even if you aren't looking for a full-on hike, it's worth driving to Blackwater Falls and checking out the 57-foot cascade. There are other waterfalls in the park that you can visit that offer a bit more solitude, but none are as tall or as impressive as this one.

The Shenandoah River Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that runs parallel to US 340 as it crosses the Shenandoah River near Harpers Ferry. You get a great view of where the river meets the Potomac River from this quarter-mile bridge.

Enjoy panoramic views of the gorge and the New River Gorge Bridge from the Long Point viewpoint. This is a great trail for mountain biking, although riders should be cautious of hikers sharing the trail. Bikes are not permitted the last 0.2 miles before the top, but there is a bike rack available at this point.

The Kanawha State Forest spans over 9,300 acres, and is well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts for its diversity in plants, animals, and recreational opportunities. The forest is popular for activities such as camping, hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, fishing, hunting, and geocaching. Picnic areas make for a nice place to rest among the impressive display of native wildflowers and various bird species.

This spur of the Canyon Rim Boardwalk provides closeup views of the New River Gorge Bridge, and it is fully accessible.

It's hard to beat the northwest-facing perspective at Long Point, where the New River—and its famous namesake bridge—stretch majestically before hikers. And it's not a long trek, so it's relatively accessible too. Remember to communicate with other hikers and use trail etiquette, as there is a falling risk in the last few yards before the point and at the point itself.
