The Spitalgrund-Oberes Volkachtal nature reserve is a nature reserve in the Schweinfurt district. It is mainly in the municipality of Michelau in the Steigerwald and partly in the unincorporated area of Hundelshausen. The protected area was placed under protection by the authority on 1985. The area was based on areas in Spitalgrund near Prüßberg purchased by the Bund Naturschutz with the support of Bernhard Grzimek, who lived nearby in Donnersdorf at the time, and the Frankfurt Zoological Society at the end of the 1970s. Grzimek had already acquired the first areas of today's nature reserve on his own in 1975 and later signed them over to the then newly founded Bund Naturschutz. The elongated area follows the upper reaches of the Volkach to the so-called Spitalgrund northeast of the village of Prüßberg. The upper reaches of the Volkach above Michelau in the Steigerwald are called Spitalbach and Aubach, which are fed by the smaller streams Mühlbach, Holzbach and Grundbach. The area includes meadows and alluvial forests on both sides of the streams as well as steep ravine forests. The forest is an oak-hornbeam forest with the typical secondary tree species such as wild cherry, small-leaved lime, mountain elm and service tree. The watercourses of the area are home to mullets and brook lampreys, in tributaries there are crayfish and stone crabs. The wetlands provide habitat for amphibians, including the fire salamander. Inhabitants of the hillside gorge forests in Spitalgrund include middle-spotted woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, lesser woodpecker, green woodpecker, gray woodpecker and black woodpecker, whose burrows are used by stock doves, dormouse, bats and hornets. Wild garlic, martagon lily, lesser celandine, larkspur and forest violet can be found on the slopes and streams. Neuhausen is a hamlet in the district of Prüßberg, a district of Michelau, in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt. The history of Neuhausen is closely linked to that of Zabelstein. The village was founded as a so-called late clearing "to the new houses". The inhabitants of the Zabelsteiner hamlet near Neuhof are to be addressed as the founders of the settlement.
