Birkenfelde is a Franconian settlement and arranged as a typical cluster village. It lies in a basin between Iberg, Heiligenberg and Hennefeste. Birkenfelde was first mentioned in a document in 1055.

Birkenfelde has the only St. Leonard Church in Eichsfeld. The baroque church has a valuable main altar from 1715. A painting of Christ's resurrection is the centerpiece of the altar. The church was built between 1708 and 1711 as a successor to a fortified church that had become dilapidated.

Only 130m away from the main path, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Schönhagen and (on the right) Birkenfelde from a bench (tied to the tree). If the weather is clear, you can see endless kilometers. You should take binoculars with you. On the bench you can take a break in peace. It's really easy to get here from the sports field above the village of Röhrig.
