The lock keeper was responsible for irrigation in the Bruchhausen-Vilsen, Syke, and Thedinghausen melioration area. In winter, the fields were to be fertilized with the Weser's floodwaters. The Weser floods of 1946 left the melioration systems in poor condition. Between 1949 and 1954, attempts were made to restore them to working order.
