베어라우흐탈

The old iron bridge of the district railway is a typical iron bridge of its time, but today it is in a state of severe disrepair. The district railway ran here until 1974 – today only the most daring venture across.

The church in Schwabstedt impresses with its clearly structured space, ornate wooden ceilings, historical paintings, and the magnificent altar as its centerpiece. The interior is complemented by the ancient door dating from around 1600, which allows visitors to truly feel the history and tradition of the church.

From the cemetery of St. James' Church, a spiral path leads up to the base of the bell tower, offering a picturesque view of the church, the churchyard, surrounding houses from the same period, and the nearby bend of the Treene River. Especially in winter, when the linden trees are sparse, the scene resembles a meticulously detailed model railway landscape. A short, somewhat steep climb, but absolutely worth the effort for this special view.

The church originates from a Romanesque fieldstone building dating back to the Middle Ages, remnants of this structure are still visible. Its current exterior appearance was significantly shaped in the 19th century, with notable work carried out in 1862 and a major redesign in 1889, during which fieldstone with brick details (e.g., the portal/gable) defines the building's form. Its location in the Treene Valley and its rich interior furnishings (including a significant carved altarpiece) make the ensemble particularly worth seeing.

Until the early 1980s, the Husum-Erfde railway line ran here. Do not enter the bridge!
