Today's Nature Discovery Center is the only building left behind by the excavator in the village of Wanninchen. Nestled in the heart of the Lower Lusatian Ridge Nature Park lies the Höllberghof – a three-sided farm built from wood, clay, straw, and reeds, faithfully based on a historical model. The complex is complemented by a barn, a cottager's house, and a bakehouse. This was the centre of the village of Wanninchen until 1985, when it, like five other villages, fell victim to open-cast lignite mining.

After decades of coal mining, a unique natural paradise with bizarre dunes, new forests, meadows and extensive lakes was created here. Today's nature experience center is the only building that the excavator left behind in the village of Wanninchen. With its panoramic view over the Schlabendorfer Lake and the nature experience areas, it is now a destination for many enthusiastic nature lovers.

The town of Wanninchen was demolished in 1985 to make way for open-cast lignite mining. The last remaining house now houses the Sielmann Foundation. It has purchased 3,300 hectares and is allowing nature to take its course.
