The ponds were probably created by Cistercians for fish farming in the 12th century. The Großer Paul pond was designated as a natural monument requiring special protection in 1933. It dried up due to open-cast lignite mining between 1987 and 1993 and had to be artificially irrigated. All ponds are connected by ditches.
