Established as a private boys' school in 1895, it was transferred to municipal ownership in 1898. The main building (Building 1) was constructed between 1899 and 1900 according to plans by Wittenberge's city architect, Friede Everhard Bruns. In 1900, the school moved into its newly constructed building on Sandfurttrift, designed in the Neo-Gothic style with exposed brick facades. Today, the Gymnasium places a strong emphasis on science subjects and has been a member of the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers at Schools (MINT-EC) since 2000.

Clara Zetkin Park in Wittenberge is one of the city's central green spaces and serves as an important meeting place. The Old Main Customs Office in Wittenberge dates back to the 19th century and served to monitor the flow of goods across the Elbe River. After years of disuse, it was renovated and converted into modern apartments, while preserving its historical appearance. The building remains a testament to Wittenberge's economic importance in Elbe River trade.
