Originally, the Schaumburg was a medieval hilltop castle, probably built as early as the 12th century. It served to secure the trade route and control the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was remodeled and expanded. Over time, however, it lost its military significance and was partially destroyed during the Peasants' War (1524/25). Later, a manor, the so-called Schaumburg Domain, was built on the site of the former castle complex. At that time, a domain usually referred to a large agricultural holding, often owned by the state or a royal house, whose income flowed directly into the state treasury or was used to support the estate.
