High on the Kirster Grat between Enkirch and Starkenburg, a bench invites you to linger - with a breathtaking view over the Moselle valley. The Moselle meanders deep below, opposite are the Moselle protection harbor and Mont Royal. Downstream from the Moselle, Enkirch and Kövenig greet you, upstream from the Moselle, Starkenburg sits enthroned on the hill and Traben-Trarbach in the valley. Here, between the sky and the vines, you can feel the beauty of the Moselle in all its fullness.

The lock at Enkirch is an important waterway infrastructure along the Moselle in Germany. It serves to regulate the water level in the river for ship traffic and enables ships to overcome differences in height. The lock at Enkirch was built in 1964 and is part of an extensive network of locks along the Moselle. Consisting of two lock chambers, it allows both small and larger vessels to navigate the river system safely and efficiently.

Enkirch has belonged to the county of Sponheim since the 11th century. In the 12th century, the people of Sponheim built the "Starkenburg" above Enkirch. Around 1240 the county was divided into the "Front" and "Hintere County of Sponheim", also known as "Sponheim Starkenburg". At that time, Enkirch was the main town of the county and therefore received the charter of liberty with city and market rights as well as its own jurisdiction as early as 1248.
