Here is an open air museum with all the info about the volcanoes in the Vulkaneifel and the types of stone. Quite interesting! With a nice place to take a break too.

What a relaxing place for a break at this beautiful lake. If you look around you can imagine yourself standing in the crater of a volcano.

The Hinkelsmaar belongs to the Mosenberg volcanic group, which erupted approximately 80,000 years ago. The Hinkelsmaar represents the most recent eruption. It is surrounded only by a relatively shallow embankment that was once filled with water. The crater has a diameter of approximately 100 meters and a depth of only about 10 meters. After rainfall, water temporarily stands in parts of the crater, the intermediate moor. Parking: Visitors should use the Hinkelsmaar/Crater Lake parking lot or the parking lot at the fishing emplacement. To do so, simply follow the appropriate signs before entering Bettenfeld from Manderscheid via the L16.

From here, you can see far across the Eifel to the heights of the Hunsrück. Nearby, you can see Buchholz Abbey and Pantenburg, as well as some houses in Manderscheid.
