A beautifully rustic side valley. The namesake of the tour.

The Hölzbach Gorge is the absolute highlight and namesake of the Traumschleife Hunolsteiner Gorge Tour, a highly varied premium circular hiking trail in the Hunsrück. This section is an impressive, approximately 800-meter-long stretch of untouched nature, located in the last third of the trail, just before the Hölzbach flows into the Dhron. The path through the deeply cut, gorge-like ravine is a wildly romantic experience, where the gurgling and bubbling water of the stream creates a cool and almost magical soundscape that surrounds the hiker. Here, the stream winds its way between slate cliffs and large boulders, forming rapids and small waterfalls, and providing a cool home for ferns and mosses. The gorge is accessed on narrow paths that require surefootedness and sturdy footwear; in some more challenging sections, there are even ropes for support to make the ascent easier. Crossing the Hölzbachklamm is the most intense and wildest part of the entire tour and leaves hikers with a lasting impression of the primal power of the Hunsrück nature.

The Hunolsteiner Gorge Tour dream loop in the Hunsrück is an outstanding premium circular hiking trail that offers exceptionally diverse scenery over a distance of approximately ten to eleven kilometers. The tour owes its name to its undisputed highlight, the Hölzbach Gorge, but the entire route is a diverse experience. Our starting point was the cozy Hunolsteiner Hof farm café, from where the trail quickly leads to its first cultural highlight: the Hunolstein Castle ruins. The ruins of the former governors of Hunolstein sit enthroned on a striking quartzite rock in the heart of the village and reward the climb with an impressive view over the Hunsrück hills and deep into the indented Dhron Valley. After the historical excursion, the trail delves into the wild and romantic nature of the stream valleys. Shaded forest paths and along the Dhron, where gravel banks invite you to linger, finally lead to the eponymous section. The Hölzbach Gorge itself is an 800-meter-long natural gem, a deeply cut, gorge-like path where the stream bubbles between rocks, creating a cool atmosphere lined with mosses and ferns. Surefootedness is required here, as the path is natural and damp in places. However, it can be easily negotiated in some sections with the help of ropes. The gurgling and rushing waters of the Hölzbach, which sometimes form small waterfalls, provide a fascinating audible backdrop. After the strenuous but rewarding climb out of the gorge, the route leads back to the top via forest paths and wide meadows. The Hunolstein Gorge Tour thus uniquely combines steep rock formations and wild streams with expansive views and cultural relics of the region.

Ancient oak trees stand on the rocky massif, having survived for centuries on the barren ground. Records show that the trees were planted in 1799. Because of the steep slope and the numerous boulders, timber was never logged here. Down in the valley, the Hölzbach Gorge can be seen and heard.
