10월 16, 2025, Birdwatching Station Mittlerer Bruch
The "Mittleres Bruch" observation point is located directly on one of the most beautiful sections of the "Landtour Bückeburg" (Bückeburg Country Tour), as well as other popular cycling routes. From here, you have an uninterrupted view of the fascinating flora and fauna of the wet meadows and floodplains of the Bückeburg lowlands. With a little patience and luck, you can observe various, even rare, bird species "at work." A detailed information panel on "Bird Species" provides even non-experts with the necessary specialist knowledge. Tip: Bring binoculars and/or a camera with a suitably large telephoto lens! It's worth it. This will make your bike ride or hike a truly special experience.🍀🌟

The old town is worth more than just a quick look, and a must-see is the town church. It's open to pilgrims as a generous pilgrimage church.

A visit is truly wonderful. It's important to book a guided tour. The castle is privately owned, so you can really see everything.

I was surprised that Herder worked here. And it is the seat of the regional church of Schaumburg-Lippe, one of the smaller regional churches.

The fountain of virtue, which stands in the center of the forecourt of Bückeburg Castle, was created by Otto IV. It was built in 1552 and originally stood in the castle courtyard of Stadthagen. In 1921 it was transferred to Bückeburg and has been part of the castle courtyard's furnishings ever since. The fountain bowl is supported by 6 columns. The central column shows the cardinal virtues and the coats of arms of Otto IV and his first wife Maria of Pomerania-Stettin. The fountain column is crowned by the allegory of Justitia. Between the Roman Pantheon and Neoclassicism Everything at the burial site in the Bückeburg castle park is monumental - it is hard to beat in terms of splendor. The exterior of the building is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome with its vestibule and dome, but designed more freely and "more modern" in the spirit of the beginning of Neoclassicism. The rectangular vestibule with its gable roof is adorned with a classicist facade made of travertine. The entrance area is impressively designed with columns, capitals and the symbols of the four evangelists. Above this is a richly decorated relief band and the family coat of arms. Visitors to the mausoleum come to the vestibule via the wide open staircase and through the huge round-arched portal and then into the 25-meter-high hall with the huge mosaic dome. It is supported by ten columns, and the walk-in niches in between have transverse barrel vaults. The copper dome is gilded on the inside - what a sight! The altar niche is also gilded, the architectural interior design is richly structured between round-arch arcades, various column shapes and their capitals as well as the magnificently gilded angel frieze with 1.72 meter high figures. The construction costs amounted to over a million gold marks - a fortune at the time and more than twice as much as originally estimated. In 2023, the German Foundation for Monument Protection supported the renovation of the mausoleum and sponsored the restoration of the windows. The mausoleum of superlatives A 500 square meter mosaic surface with over 1400 different colors in a huge copper-covered dome, a monumental building made of sandstone that stands out from the surrounding 80 hectare castle park. The Bückeberg mausoleum is the largest burial site of its kind in all of Europe and the largest private princely crypt in the world. Prince Adolf II of Schaumburg-Lippe (1883-1936) had the mausoleum built from 1911 to 1916 in the neo-Romanesque style, according to plans by the Berlin architect Paul Baumgarten. Lots of space for the princely family When Prince Adolf II of Schaumburg-Lippe took over the government from his deceased father Georg in 1911, starting construction of the mausoleum was one of his first official tasks. The princely mausoleum from the 17th century in Stadthagen was fully occupied. It was originally intended for only four deceased people and was nevertheless used for almost three centuries. Something larger was to be built as the final resting place of Georg zu Schaumburg-Lippe. His son Adolf II had ambitious plans - he wanted to build a huge museum and art complex in Bückeburg and Bad Eilsen. The mausoleum was part of these plans and immediately set standards with its immense size. They obviously wanted to make sure that there would be enough space for the noble family in the future. The First World War (1914-18) delayed the completion of the building. 18 members of the royal family have so far found their final resting place in the Bückeberg mausoleum. Their sarcophagi are in the basement. (Source: https://www.denkmalschutz.de/denkmal/mausoleum-bueckeburg.html)

Our insider tip not far from the center of Bückeburg - the mausoleum! There is a lot to discover in the largest private princely crypt in the world, picturesquely located in the castle park. Did you know, for example, that the gold mosaic dome is the largest in Europe?! The monumental family tomb was built by Prince Adolf between 1911 and 1916. 18 family members of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe, princes and princesses have since been buried in the crypt, and another 8 in the urn cemetery outside the mausoleum. The brother, father and mother of today's Prince Alexander also rest there. The mausoleum opens its doors every weekend and public holiday and can be visited on your own or as part of a guided tour.
