Elkofen Castle, also known as Elkofen Castle, Unterelkofen, Ölkofen, is one of the best preserved castles in Upper Bavaria and is located in the town of Unterelkofen. In some places it is very tricky to navigate. If you get distracted here, you could quickly end up in a bad situation.

Is privately owned. You used to be able to walk around it, but the path is now closed.

In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, Elkofen Castle was the center of a Hofmark, a district with its own lower jurisdiction and administration, which extended over the surrounding estates of the Hofmark lord's subjects. The boundaries of the Hofmark territory were made visible by landmarks and pillars. If criminals were arrested in Hofmark Elkofen who were guilty of a crime worthy of death (murder, robbery, rape), they had to be handed over to the sovereign high court in Markt Schwaben as blood court cases. For this purpose, the delinquents were tied with a silk thread to this border column made of tuff stone, which was formerly located directly on the way from Unterelkofen to Grafing. Then the henchman of the Swabian court had to be called. If he did not appear despite being called three times, the criminal was to be released. Accordingly, his life hung by the proverbial "silk thread". Source and more info https://bayern-kultur.de/sehenswert/d_sehenswert.php?id=1093

Built on a lonely hill, accessible via a small bridge. In my opinion, a small observatory would be better off here.

Late Gothic hilltop castle, which was built in the 10th century and is still inhabited today. Therefore not open to the public, but also pretty to look at from the outside, even in the dark and February rain 😉.

The mirror ponds form a chain of artificially created fish ponds in a side valley of the Attel. Around the pond, beautiful hiking and jogging paths lead through the cool forest, and the views over the water are lovely.

The castle / castle Elkofen is one of the best preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. The castle tries to hide behind large trees on the castle hill, but two approaches give you a nice view of the walls and the tower. In fact, the castle makes a very well-kept impression, but you are not allowed to look inside, because the complex is privately owned by the Rechberg-Rothenlöwen family, who owned the castle between 1664 and 1732 and bought it again in 1871. Clearly a case of real love... The castle is surrounded by a wide and deep, formerly water-filled moat and is of considerable proportions. The oldest part of the castle is the keep, which dates back to the early Middle Ages. Further information and pictures: http://burgenseite.de/html/elkofen.html

The Marian column is located on a sunny hill. From there you have a nice overview of the surrounding meadows and a small stream. A really beautiful landscape! In winter, this hill turns into a sledge hill with a gentle descent, which, however, is bordered by the stream and into a steep ice channel.

Elkofen Castle is privately owned, but you can walk around the castle and look at it from all sides. The location is interesting because the Schlossberg piles up in a large funnel. The castle park with pond is located in this funnel. Elkofen is a well-protected hilltop castle, but it is not really visible from afar because it only insignificantly towers over the surrounding area. This rather hidden location was very helpful during the Thirty Years' War because the castle was not discovered by the Swedes. That is the popular opinion. However, it may also be that the Swedish troops were already severely weakened at this time and have therefore given up a siege. And here's a hint for lovers who are looking for a wedding location: You can get married in the chapel at Elkofen Castle. In addition, there are sometimes concerts in the castle courtyard, which take place in the church of St. Michael in Alxing when it rains. Dates are published in the city magazine of the city of Ebersberg.

Where does the expression: "His life hangs by a thread" come from? It is explained at this historical border column: Elkofen Castle was the center of a Hofmark with its own lower jurisdiction. In the case of serious crimes such as murder, robbery or rape, the suspects had to be handed over to the high court in Markt Schwaben. For this purpose, the suspects were tied to this border pillar made of tuff with a silk thread. Then the henchman of the Swabian graveyard was called. If this did not appear despite three requests, the suspect had to be released. I don't think that happened often, but that's how the established phrase about life hanging by a thread came about.
