This is the tallest building in Koyasan, being about 48m in height. It was completed in 876. Over the centuries it was destroyed by fire due to lightning strikes five times - and rebuilt every time. This current building was erected in 1937.

10월 21, 2025, Nara Park Deer
As "nice" as the encounter with the Nara deer may seem at first glance, they are still animals and therefore loyal to their behavior, either instinctively or according to their life stage and gender. Conditional caution, rutting, food jealousy, and territorial demarcation could thus lead to "unpredictable" behavior...

Among the many graves, one repeatedly notices monk statues wearing red children's bibs. The Jizō Bosatsu funeral cult is intended to help elders overcome their grief over the loss of children who died young. Jizō accompanies the so-called 'water children' safely across the river of the underworld to paradise. Jizō recognizes their scent through the red bib. It is both impressive and depressing to see how many Jizō figures can be found here.

Until the modernization of Japan in the late 19th century, women were forbidden from entering Koyasan. Though women were banned from entry, seven halls were built at each of the entrances to Koyasan for the female pilgrims to pray. Today only one of these halls still remains, which can be found near the Fudozaka Slope.

9월 25, 2025, Nara Park Deer
Nara Park is home to approximately 1,200 trusting sika deer, considered messengers of a deity and protected as living national treasures. The deer are so greedy for the biscuits (200 yen) that they even spurn grass. The male deer no longer have antlers... which is a good thing, because otherwise several tourists would be injured.
