Beautifully decorated (depending on the season), with a seat cushion for a warm hiker's bottom, a bottle opener, a Bible for those who like it, and a box containing a hiking guide (even working pens and reading glasses are included). This gem is truly well hidden. I don't know if it's open to the public, although the tourist association (see below) recommends it. Perched on a small hill, surrounded by a moat, the half-timbered Altheim Castle seems to literally merge with the Aischgrund landscape. A bridge leads to the spacious entrance area of the 17th-century house, which is given an atmospheric prelude by lushly planted boxwood and perennial beds. The garden itself has a park-like character. The secluded seating areas under the mighty trees repeatedly offer views of the moat, and the alternation between dense plantings and spacious open spaces creates a diverse scene. The focal point is the fountain in the middle of a large body of water. From here you have a wonderful view of the valley, the Windsheim Bay and the hilly landscape behind it.
