The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Kämpfelbach, in the district of Ersingen, and covers an area of 38 hectares. It is located on the B10 between Wilferdingen and Pforzheim in the southern Kraichgau region. It is only about a 10-15 minute drive from Karlsbad/Waldbronn. Here, we find a valley cut through the Muschelkalk. Numerous rare bird species, such as the wryneck and the whitethroat, live in the richly structured terrain. Numerous orchid species and other rare plants bloom on the calcareous meadows of the southwest slope. The plant diversity provides food and development for many insect species – we can observe butterflies such as the swallowtail butterfly, various burnet moths, the sparse fritillary, or the critically endangered gentian blue, which lays its eggs exclusively on gentian plants. The praying mantis, a member of the order of mantises, has also reportedly been spotted here. In the upper third of the slope, there is a path parallel to the federal highway, from which one can observe the flora and fauna without causing damage by crossing the meadow. Areas with such biodiversity in flora and fauna have become rare and are therefore particularly worthy of protection.
