The largest Waldrapp aviary in the world is located in Waidhofen an der Thaya. Feeding the Waldrapp is a unique experience. The endangered ibis species has found a home in Waidhofen. In 1882, a religious community was founded in Waidhofen, which also included the political districts of Gmünd, Pöggstall and, from 1892, Zwettl. The "Statutes for the Israeli religious community in Waidhofen an der Thaya" date from 1896. Its synagogue, housed in a house on Niederleuthnerstrasse, was inaugurated in the same year. At about the same time as the community was founded, an Israelite cemetery was also established in Waidhofen.
