The former Church of St. Ulrich was likely built as early as the 11th century. It is first documented in 1180. The church belonged to the Schallenberg family's castle. In 1427, it was destroyed by the Hussites and is said to have stood in ruins for a long time afterward. It was not until 1482, under Bernhard von Schallenberg of St. Ulrich, that the church was rebuilt. In 1786, as part of the Josephine reforms, the church was deemed superfluous and thus lost its significance. In 1870, the nave was demolished. Only the Gothic chancel (presbytery) remains of the church. This is enclosed by a wall and supported by two pillars. The wooden statues of St. Ulrich, St. Norbert, and St. Augustine date from around 1680. The simple altar, made by Josef Kepplinger from Ottensheim, was installed in 1876. The church services, which have been held regularly once a week since the St. Ulrich elementary school was founded, are very well attended. The priest from Niederwaldkirchen comes to St. Ulrich to celebrate Mass.

A very convenient place to stay to end your first stage on the granite pilgrimage route. Very nice rooms, good food. The boss people could be a bit friendlier - then it would be perfect ;-)

The Funtasia Niederwaldkirchen was opened on September 4th, 2011 and now also offers the proven Funtasia quality program in the Bioregion Mühlviertel. This is an ideal excursion for children's birthday parties, schools, kindergartens, holiday campaigns and groups for the disabled. Here the children can go into the stable, milk the goats, hop in the hay, feed the cows and get active in the in-house bread bakery.
