The village of Gerwigshain was located approximately 3 km northwest of Mengsberg, on the road to Hatzbach (locally known as Butterweg), near the site of a deserted church, in the headwaters of a stream flowing towards Mengsberg. The field name appears in various forms: 1555 "Wüstung Gerwichshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1576 "Gerbisheim", around 1614 "Wüste Gerwigshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1708/10 "Wüste Kirche" (deserted church). The Butterweg (Butter Path) near Hatzbach is a historic trade route used by farmers from Hatzbach and Erksdorf to sell their products, such as butter, eggs, and game, at the market in distant Kassel. Today, it forms part of a network of hiking trails that wind through the Hatzbach Forest, revealing traces of this past. The trail passes landmarks like the Nadelöhr (Needle's Eye) and shelters such as the Mooshäuschen (Moss House), offering a scenic route along the Rhine-Weser watershed. Source: KI

An excellent starting point for hikes in the region. Historical points of interest everywhere.

The three stones are coat of arms boundary stones from 1841. Several benches in the immediate vicinity make the place a great place to take a break and relax.
