The Valkenhorst is part of the Brabant landscape. A large part of Valkenhorst is not freely accessible. The former fishponds can be visited occasionally with a guide. Heathlands once existed here. Here, the Valkenswaard falconers caught the falcons they trained for falconry; this is how the area got its name. Around 1900, falconry disappeared, and a new purpose was sought for the heathlands. Fishponds were dug near the Tongelreep. Here, carp, among other species, were bred. Fish farming attracted all sorts of (then undesirable) bird species that enjoyed a meal. Fish farming is now also a thing of the past. The abundance of birds has remained, and birds such as ducks, geese, and swans no longer need to fear for their lives. The area is now home to the rare bittern and bittern, for example. A walking route has been established around one pond.
