The railway bridge in Neckargemünd is a special structure with two levels: Deutsche Bahn trains run on the top 🚆, while a safe footpath and cycle path runs below 🚶‍♀️🚴 – ideal for hikers and day-trippers along the Neckarsteig trail.

First mentioned in documents in 988 under the name Gmundi, King Henry VII elevated the settlement to a free imperial city around 1230. In 1330, Emperor Ludwig pledged Neckargemünd to the Count Palatine of the Rhine, who relocated the court of the Meckesheim Zent here in 1346. In 1395, Neckargemünd lost its status as an imperial city when it was incorporated into the Palatinate. In 1466, the town was granted market rights, which were expanded in 1544. In 1566, the town, like the entire Palatinate, became Protestant.

After crossing the lock and getting closer to Neckarsteinach, the view of 3 of the 4 castles gets better and better.

Visitors are drawn to Hirschhorn because of its beautiful historic old town with its city walls and blue tower. Charming half-timbered houses, idyllic alleyways, and small squares await discovery. The main street is the town's pedestrian zone, offering shops, restaurants, and cafés. It's well worth strolling through the lanes and exploring. Hirschhorn Castle, also known as Hirschhorn Fortress, is particularly worth seeing. Besides the old town, it's the town's highlight. This spur castle features a beautiful gatekeeper's house between the lower and upper wards, a keep, a castle chapel (now used as a registry office), a Renaissance building, and a prison tower. The castle also houses a hotel with a restaurant.
