The town square, a protected historical ensemble, with its surrounding commercial buildings, has always formed the heart of Grafenau. The weekly market is held here every Friday morning. The town square rises steeply to the north. Here stands the neo-Gothic former town hall, built in 1845 and featuring a stepped gable; it now houses the National Park Administration.
