small and quiet little town with a nice atmosphere and harbor

At the summit of Mt. Battie stands a stone tower, built in 1921 by the Mt. Battie Association. Previously, a hotel called the Summit House stood on this site since the late 19th century. Access was from the north via a carriage road, which was later expanded into a paved road to the summit with a parking lot. From the summit and the tower, we have a magnificent view of West Penobscot Bay and Camden Harbor under blue skies. https://maineanencyclopedia.com/mount-battie/

The Mount Battie Trail is advertised as a one-hour hike with a steep ascent from the south to the summit at approximately 240 m. The rain the day before and fog until midday make the ascent over the still-wet granite slabs in the forest a challenge (even more so on the descent). As the forest thins, we have the best view of the city by the bay, surrounded by dense forest as far as the eye can see. There is a small, free parking lot at the lower trailhead; we leave the vehicle in the village on Washington Street, also free of charge. Isle au Haut Boat Services, a non-profit corporation, operates year-round passenger, mail and freight service between the Town of Stonington and Isle au Haut, as well as seasonal service to Acadia National Park's Duck Harbor Landing. The financial shortfall is covered by support from Isle au Haut Town, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Park Service and private donors.
