The Middle Fork River County Forest Preserve is home to miles of nature trails, shelters, picnic spots, an activity center, and access to the Middle Fork Vermillion River. The trails are intertwined and offer the option to create different length loops. Being so disconnected from city life, you can get a lot of solitude out here.

Best known for its hiking, fishing, bird watching, and picnicking offerings, Sangamon River Forest Preserve is a popular spot in the Wildcat Slough portion of the river valley. The trails in the preserve are natural and primarily grass with some dirt paths as well. You get some great views of the water from the trails, and you can also spot a lot of different local flora and fauna.

Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve features miles of paved and unpaved paths open to a variety of trail users. The Buffalo Trace Prairie area features most of the trails in the preserve and plays host to a load of different plant and animal species. There aren't any major hills, so this is a great place for everyone in the family.

You get pretty decent views from a bunch of different spots around the River Bend Forest Preserve, but no perspective is quite like this one. Being across the water from the main preserve entrance, this area usually offers a bit of solitude and great views of the water. A smooth gravel trail leads to this great viewpoint.

Most of the trails in the River Bend Forest Preserve have natural surfaces and are pretty flat. This particular path is a mowed grass path with some informational signs along the way. There are also some trails that are crushed gravel and packed dirt that lead along the banks of the water.

During spring, summer, and fall months, the Homer Lake Natural Playscape is open from 9:45am until dusk each day. This area was created so that kids have a natural place to explore with hands and minds. Play comes in the form of exploration of the preserve's ecosystems and wildlife.

Homer Lake on Homer Lake Forest Preserve is an 814-acre preserve with scenic trails and a great opportunity for recreation year-round, from sledding in winter to fishing and boating in summer. Homer Lake is home to a horse trail once traveled by Abraham Lincoln, now marked by a Looking for Lincoln wayside exhibit, and a 14-acre site of the early 1900s "destination park" on the Salt Fork River.
