Hikers exploring Island Beach State Park can enjoy the diverse landscape of sand dunes stretching from the beach to the bay. The primary dune, or foredune, lies closest to the ocean with its crest running parallel to the shoreline. Behind it, secondary dunes, or back dunes, become more irregular and weathered with age. This dynamic dune system offers a fascinating glimpse into the park's natural processes and provides a unique hiking experience amidst the shifting sands.
