The Red River Trail was used by fur traders and settlers traveling between St. Paul, Minnesota, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada. The oxcarts forded, or in high water, floated, across the Mississippi River here,

The Mississippi River is the second-longest river in the United States. It flows from Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico.

The picnic area is a great spot from which to access the trails in Shingobee Recreation Area. For winter activities, the parking lot a hlaf mile up the road offers better access to the sledding hill and chalet. The word "Shingobee" translates to the Ojibwe word for local pine, cedar and spruce trees.

Hikers are treated to a view of Recreation Lake. This view is especially pretty in the fall when the leaves change color.

The Shingobee Recreation Area is a great spot for hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. Public restrooms are available. If you come here for a winter hike with kids consider bringing a sled for the sledding hill! The warming chalet is open for winter activities, though it may be temporarily closed for Covid.

Hikers are treated with a view across Goose Lake. The North Country Trail, which traverses almost 5,000 miles between Vermont and North Dakota, passes through the Goose Lake trail system along the north shore.

The Goose Lake trail system is best experienced in the fall, when the leaves are in full color. In the winter the trails make for excellent cross country skiing. If you visit in the summer be sure to bring bug repellent and watch out for ticks! The hike to Goose Lake is beautiful any time of year.

Strawberry Lake is a small glacial lake nestled between Cass Lake and Pike Bay. The Migizi Trail between Pike Lake and Norway Beach provides scenic lakeside access.
