This spot goes by Nine Mile Dam and by Nine Mile Falls. The dam was built on a waterfall in 1908, which created Nine Mile Reservoir. The dam and ten cottages that surround the dam were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The cottages were built as housing for the employees of the dam when the area around the dam was still a relatively remote place. The overlook of Nine Mile Falls is a popular stop for visitors in Riverside State Park and you can expect to see other hikers on your trip.

A healthy riparian and wetland habitat at low elevation is actually quite rare in Eastern Washington and Pend Oreille County. This area provides many declining wildlife species, such Townsend's big-eared bat, northern goshawk, western toad, Columbia spotted frog, and pygmy whitefish with a favorable habitat.

Little Pend Oreille River provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the flora and Fauna of the area. As well as several great views of Calispell Peak. With patience, planning, and if you are fortunate, you might have the privilege of sighting the elusive river otter.

About halfway through the trail, you will find a viewing platform. Take a look at Lake Thomas, part of the chain of lakes. Then extend your sight towards Thomas and Green Mountains off in the distance.
