River Walk is closed for a new greenway but, most other areas closed to vehicle traffic is open to hiking/walking. Historic mill village is nice! Took our wedding photos there.

Explore Park's Historic Area features a number of restored buildings including a schoolhouse, blacksmiths shop, barns, cabins, and mill. It's mostly flat and well maintained so you can do this one with the whole family.

One of the more unique overlooks on the parkway in this part of Virginia, Thunder Ridge Overlook can be found at Milepost 74 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It peers over the Arnold Valley and offers views to the south of Thunder Ridge, which the Appalachian Trail traverses on its way towards the state of North Carolina.

The Harkening Hill Loop Trail is a singletrack trail through the forest with lots of trees, rocks, and plants lining the trail. This is a beautiful trail through a tunnel of trees, but this does result in limited views of the surrounding mountains.

The summit of Harkening Hill rests at 3,364 feet and offers a few spotty views through the trees. Perhaps the most beautiful views on the mountain are of the trail, itself. On a clear day, you can look south and see the peak of Sharp Top Mountain.

Abbott Lake is a 24-acre reservoir right off the side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The lake offers options for fishing, hiking, and a number of other recreational activities. If you are feeling spry, you can take on a mountainous hike on the Fallingwater — Flat Top National Recreational Trail that leaves from the eastern end of the lake.
