The path to the Sand Ramp Overlook is partly rocky, partly sandy, and winds its way up. It offers magnificent views of the Great Sand Dune and the surrounding area. Benches provide a place to rest.

Buck Creek Campsite is a great place to spend the night if you don't need the facilities of an established campground. It is just a short hike from Piñon Flats Campground and you will enjoy a lot more solitude and a stunning view towards the dunes. There are no reliable water sources, so bring all the water you need. The site has no toilets, so practice Leave No Trace. To spend the night here, you have to make a reservation via https://www.recreation.gov. There are plenty of nice spots, shaded and sunny, but a reservation is just accepted for one sole party between 1 to 6 persons.

Piñon Flats Campground has 86 sites for individual tents, RVs or groups. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, food lockers and fire pits. Public restrooms are also available near the Dunes Overlook Trailhead. The campground has an amphitheater and provides access to the Wellington Ditch and Sand Ramp Trail. Because the campground is very popular, I recommend making reservations as early as possible through https://www.recreation.gov. The season begins in April and runs through October.

A one and a half mile roundtrip leads to a beautiful overlook. Along the way, you can already enjoy great views of the dunes while hiking through a high desert landscape with juniper trees and small forests.

These backcountry campsites are located just half a mile from Piñon Flats Campground. There are several nice sites, some more sheltered and shaded like others, but you can enjoy a stunning view of the dunes from nearby. To camp here, you need to obtain a permit for this site via recreation.gov.

Buck Creek is a seasonal stream that can be a water source for the nearby campsite. However, don’t rely on it and bring water.
