There is an annual race that ascends this bare rock face, challenging runners to complete a vertical mile or vertical half mile. The race runs two mile laps of the mountain—four for the half and eight for the full vertical mile. All other days of the year this is a fun hiking trail where you can experience the grit of the mountain on your own terms, and enjoy the views that come from hiking the bare rock face.

Standing at 1,865 feet above sea level, it's one of the highest points in Yadkin Valley. The knob is a popular hiking destination, and, while the summit provides limited panoramic views due to tree coverage, you can still enjoy the tranquility of the woods.

The trail is part of the larger Mountain-to-Sea Trail, a renowned hiking corridor traversing the state. While the summit doesn't boast extraordinary panoramic views, the journey itself is rewarding. Hikers encounter a diverse ecosystem, featuring towering hemlocks, vibrant rhododendrons, and towering pines. The trail is also home to various wildlife, making it an excellent spot for nature enthusiasts.

The Jonesville Greenway offers a serene escape along the banks of the Yadkin River. This two-mile multi-use trail is perfect for walking, running, or biking. As you explore, you'll be treated to picturesque views of the river and surrounding countryside.

The river, a significant waterway in the state, flows through the town, providing opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Elkin has thoughtfully developed its riverfront area, creating access points and amenities for visitors. The Yadkin River Blue Water Trail, a designated paddling route, passes through Elkin, making it a popular destination for water-based recreation.

Situated conveniently close to downtown Elkin and boasts a beautiful location adjacent to the Yadkin River. The park offers a variety of amenities including pickleball courts, a playground, a softball field, open green spaces, restrooms, and a river access ramp. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, Crater Park is connected to a walking trail, bike lane, and sidewalk that leads directly to Elkin Municipal Park.

As a designated NC Main Street Accredited Community, it boasts well-preserved historic buildings that house unique shops and restaurants. Visitors can explore the town's rich history through murals and local attractions.

Not even a mile roundtrip, a visit to The Cascades is worthwhile for anyone near the Boone area. The most popular route is a short trail route leaving from the parking lot at Milepost 272.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The falls are the main attraction in the area, but the picnic area near the parking lot stays busy as well. Refrain from climbing on the rocks near the falls, as people have died here from slipping and falling.
