In the immediate vicinity of Lake Galilee is the site mentioned in the biblical accounts of the New Testament where Jesus Christ delivered the so-called "Sermon on the Mount" with the famous Beatitudes. Some prehistoric caves can be found in the cliffs. Later, the caves were part of a large fortress that had secret passages, halls and cisterns. Out here, battles to the death took place between Herod and the Hashemoneans for control of the West.

Caves are dug into the slopes of Mount Arbel, which served as hiding places for Jews fighting the Greeks and Romans. These were expanded by the Druze in the 17th century, but the original caves are proven to date from the Second Temple period. Josephus writes of the Roman conquest of some of the last Hasmonean rebels who lived in the cliffs of Mount Arbel.

Here is the Arbel Cliff, the heart of the Arbel Nature Reserve, declared a protected area in 1967, and the national park that surrounds it, which also includes Mount Nitai, Mount Savyon, the Horns of Hittim and the Arbel Plateau. From here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights.
