During the Civil War, the monastery was looted and partially burned. Nuns and their heritage were forced to flee. Many works were transported to Catalonia, sparking a heritage conflict that is still ongoing. In recent decades, works of art have been judicially returned from Catalan museums to the Sijena Monastery, turning the site into a symbol of memory, historical justice, and Aragonese heritage. Its isolated location in the Monegros mountains is part of its charm. The arid surroundings contrast with the monumentality of the building, giving it an almost mystical feel.

Cycling or walking here is like crossing the heart of the Monegros landscape: arid terrain, ochre colors, and that solitary atmosphere that makes this region so special. On windy days (like during the Orbea Monegros 2025), this area becomes even more epic: the dust, the air, and the contours of the terrain make you feel like you're on another planet.

The landscape is spectacular in the Spanish Far West.

It is worth visiting the Tozal de la Cobeta. You can enjoy spectacular 360° views while admiring the geological formation and the surrounding areas. The path from the San Miguel hermitage is simple and is dotted with areas where erosion caused by water gives rise to small formations, worthy of photographing.

Los Tozales are curious multicolored rock formations, sculpted by erosion over the centuries, they make up the soul of the essential place in the Monegros desert. From this point and a few meters away, there are some of them: Tozal Colasico, Tozal Solitario and Tozales de los Pedregales among others.

This small municipality of Leciñena in the Aragonese Monegros has a small population (1150 in 2004) but quite a bit of history. The town played an important role in the reconquest of Zaragoza. Much later, during the Spanish Civil War it was part of the republican resistance until October 12, 1936 when Franco's troops took the town. The town has a very good hostel where you can enjoy the tranquility. Around Leciñena we can find Sabinas, a tree from the Mesozoic era that, thanks to its properties resistant to extreme temperatures, can coexist with the harsh weather conditions of the area.

The relief of the town of La Almolda is characterized by the plain that represents the arid landscape typical of the region to which it belongs, only altered by some scattered hills and the foothills of the Sierra de Alcubierre to the north of the town.
