The multi-use trail along Elmore Road starts off looking very urbanized, marked by a curved pedestrian bridge over the first major road intersection. But the farther north you follow this paved trail the more interesting it gets, passing through greenbelts and even sporting a few sculptural and artistic touches. Bikes are welcome here, but please watch out for slower trail users!

If you're coming down this hill from the Kincaid chalet, it's an easy cruise as long as you don't get distracted by the pretty views and crash into a moose or a tree. But if you're going uphill, the more than half-mile of steady climbing is a real quad-burner. Wildlife sightings are very common here; please make sure to give them lots of space.

Once upon a time, you could see Portage Glacier from this viewpoint. Now it has receded behind a corner of the mountains, so from here you can only see the lake left behind by the glacier, and every so often a few icebergs might still float by. Still, the lake itself is wildly beautiful and the small visitor center nearby is interesting to visit... if it's open. This marks one of the larger interpretive displays within Earthquake Park, a parcel of land that showcases the effects of the magnitude 9.2 earthquake that struck Alaska in 1964. It's well worth pulling off the main trail to take a look or, if you're coming from the east, catch your breath from the short but steep hill leading up to this point.
