Escalante Petrified Forest State Park preserves a stunning collection of fossilized trees, some over 135 million years old, scattered across a high desert mesa. Here, you'll see colorful logs turned to stone and panoramic views of Wide Hollow Reservoir. There are places to camp, canoe, hike, or ride through this beautiful area, making it a great place to spend a weekend just outside of Escalante.

Great view from Emerald Pools Trail of the valley and the Virgin River. This is a great place along the trail to take a quick break to enjoy the peaceful setting.

The creek forms a small pond here at the base of the canyon wall before continuing on to Emerald Falls. This is a great place to stick your toes in the water and enjoy the views.

A very exceptional park, beautiful to look at.

Dog Lake is a beautiful lake located between Big Cottonwood Canyon and Millcreek. It is lined with trees and (you guessed it) dog friendly! Dogs can usually be seen splashing and swimming around this lake with their people.

Buffalo Point is one of the most popular overlooks in the entire park since the hike from the car can be cut down to about a mile roundtrip. If you decide to run off (or up) the north side, though, you'll likely get the trail to yourself. The views from this panoramic overlook are usually filling with towering mountains, the Great Salt Lake, and bison roaming the park.

Lake Catherine is a stark beauty set against the alpine backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains. It is the last of the three Brighton Lakes, or lakes Mary, Martha, and Catherine, which you'd encounter in that order as you run this trail.

You can access Quail Creek from this intersection. It's another State Park turned into a desert oasis like nearby Sand Hollow. The views created by the contrasting blue water and striking red cliffs are incredible and worth the short detour.
