The Spatschlucht was formed around 1800, when the above-ground mining of heavy spar, also known as barite, began. The white spar powder was used as an additive in the manufacture of paint and paper. All in all, barite was successfully mined in the area for almost 140 years until 1939.

The perfect entry into the front Odenwald. Between Heiligkreuz and Rippenweier there is no traffic and through 3 switchbacks you almost have a "pass feeling", even if the road only climbs a few meters and is never steep.

In 1882, the Leferenz brothers, who were active in the region, bought a large area on the western slope of the Hoher Nistler with their civil engineering and railway construction company and an area on the Bergstraße with a connecting strip in between. The aim of the entrepreneurs was actually to build a secondary railway from Heidelberg to Schriesheim and possibly expand it later. In 1883 they finally received the concession, even with the option of running the route to Weinheim.[11] Because of their poor financial situation, the brothers made a proposal to the community: their company should build a connecting railway between the community quarry and the railway at their own expense, which would become property of the community after 20 years. In return, the municipality was to undertake in future to only transport the broken material to Heidelberg via the Leferenz brothers' railway line. If the proposal were to be accepted, Leferenz would undertake not to operate a quarry itself.[11] Since the stone carters saw their work threatened, the citizens' committee meeting under their pressure narrowly decided against the brothers' proposal.[11] The company then used all its resources to build the quarry; a loading station was set up on the mountain road and a cable car was put into operation at the break.
