Best known for its hiking, fishing, bird watching, and picnicking offerings, Sangamon River Forest Preserve is a popular spot in the Wildcat Slough portion of the river valley. The trails in the preserve are natural and primarily grass with some dirt paths as well. You get some great views of the water from the trails, and you can also spot a lot of different local flora and fauna.

Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve features miles of paved and unpaved paths open to a variety of trail users. The Buffalo Trace Prairie area features most of the trails in the preserve and plays host to a load of different plant and animal species. There aren't any major hills, so this is a great place for everyone in the family.

Most of the trails in the River Bend Forest Preserve have natural surfaces and are pretty flat. This particular path is a mowed grass path with some informational signs along the way. There are also some trails that are crushed gravel and packed dirt that lead along the banks of the water.

During spring, summer, and fall months, the Homer Lake Natural Playscape is open from 9:45am until dusk each day. This area was created so that kids have a natural place to explore with hands and minds. Play comes in the form of exploration of the preserve's ecosystems and wildlife.

Meadowbrook Park is a 28-acre public park that features a playground, gardens, and a small network of paved and unpaved trails. The majority of the paths in the park consist of crushed gravel and are smooth enough for wheelchairs and strollers to use. There is a good mix of open meadow trails and paths in the woods.

Kaufman Park is home to some paved paths and the popular Kaufman Lake. There are numerous picnic sites and day use areas around the shores of the reservoir. You are allowed to fish the waters (no ice fishing), and non-motorized boat crafts can be used on the lake, such as canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards.

Crystal Lake Park is a popular spot for fishing, walking, running, and biking. There is a small network of paved paths and sidewalks in the park that create intertwining loops with trails crossing back and forth over the narrow lake. There are numerous pavilions, picnic areas, and benches spread out along the paths and around the lake.
