This basilica in the heart of Agrigento is a baroque church with an elegant façade and interiors richly decorated with stucco and works of art.

Beautiful beach with yellow sand

Its beach is considered among the most beautiful in southern Sicily. The sand is fine and golden with clear, crystalline water; it is also a destination for many surfers every year. The Agrigento area is windy but the beach is sheltered by cliffs.

The site where the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception stands was used as a sacred place since the 14th century, when a small church and a convent of Franciscan friars were built at the behest of the Chiaramonte family, the remains of which are still visible next to those of the basilica. The building, initially known as the church of San Francesco, took on its current form in 1788 and was later dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1940, at the behest of Pope Pius XII. It suffered damage during the Second World War, but was restored at the instigation of the parish priest Monsignor Michele Sclafani.
