This peaceful, winding stream is beautiful. With its rocky bottom and shaded banks, it's a quiet refuge for wildlife and a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the view. Though it’s not very large, the slow-moving creek’s natural setting is a wonderful place to appreciate the picturesque Appalachian backcountry.

On this section of the C&O Canal Towpath, you ride though through Green Ridge State Forest, one of Maryland’s largest public lands. This area is remote-feeling and heavily wooded, providing a true backcountry feel. Wildlife is abundant; it’s common to spot bald eagles, deer, and wild turkeys as you travel through this winding section of trail.

Cacapon Mountain Overlook is one of the most popular viewpoints in the entirety of Cacapon Resort State Park. There is an observation platform with a railing that looks out over the mountains. There is even an informational placard that tells you a bit about what you are looking at.

The Overlook Trail shares a path with the park road that leads up to the observation platform at the Cacapon Mountain Overlook and Prospect Rock Trailhead. The roadway gets steeper as it gets closer to the top and deteriorates from pavement to gravel as it approaches the upper trailhead. Be ready to move for other trail users if you are one of the faster bikes on the trail.

Prospect Rock is a rocky outcrop along the ridge that offers some views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The popular "Prospect Overlook" is a nearby highway pull-off, too, but you actually have to work to get to this view. There are a few different trails and service roads that ultimately lead up to the ridge, but the Prospect North Trail is the most popularly used route, and is a great double-track trail for all ability levels.

Open year-round, the park covers over 6,000 wooded acres and offers several options for lodging. Visitors may participate in activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, and more. The park was initially constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, but additions and renovations continued throughout the decades.
