7월 5, 2025, Summit Cross of Punta La Marmora
That Sardinia's highest mountain is crowned by an imposing summit cross may not be a given, but it certainly seems natural to the mountain hiker. A base made of natural stone from the surrounding area forms the lower level of this small sacred monument. A round column bears the Latin inscription "Ave Crux spes unica" (loosely translated, "Hail, [Holy] Cross, [our] only hope") and, further up, merges almost seamlessly into the cross's longitudinal beam. Like many other summit crosses, it is comparatively simple in its design and lacks a corpus, but it is certainly dignified.

Perhaps in front of this small sacred monument in the form of a summit cross that crowns the highest mountain in Sardinia, the mountain hiker will find it helpful to remember what Pope Francis prayed during the traditional Stations of the Cross in the Colosseum in Rome on the evening of Good Friday 2023: "Lord Jesus, eternal Word of the Father, you have become silence for us. And in the silence that leads us to your grave, there is one more word that we want to say to you when we think back to the Stations of the Cross that we walked with you: Thank you! (...) Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the light that you have ignited in our nights, for reconciling every separation and thus making us all brothers and sisters, children of the same Father in heaven." (Prayer for the Stations of the Cross with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, Good Friday 2023)

11월 12, 2024, Punta La Marmora Summit Cross
At 1,834 meters, Punta La Marmora is the highest peak in the whole of Sardinia. It is located in the Gennargentu massif, between the municipalities of Arzana and Desulo, and is named after the general and scientist Alberto Ferrero della Marmora, who described the Sardinian island in two scientific-literary works.

It may not be obvious that Sardinia's highest mountain is crowned by an imposing summit cross, but it seems completely natural to the mountain hiker. If you reach Punta Paulinu from Mount Bruncu Spina by walking on the high path, as you approach the rocky peak you can see on the left (towards the south-east) the famous rock formation called "Arcu Gennargentu", which is a set of three rocks that it forms a natural arch overlooking Mount Bruncu Spina on one side and the Sardinian panorama to the east.

Mount Bruncu Spina (Cardo peak), with its 1,829 meters above sea level, is the second peak in Sardinia. The summit can be easily reached from the car park at the foot of the chairlift, near the refuge of the same name (now closed). The climb is steep but short. It's worth the effort to enjoy the views from this grassy summit.

Punta Paulinu belongs to the Gennargentu mountain range. It is part of the main mountain ridge, made up of the five highest peaks on the island (Punta La Marmora, Bruncu Spina, Punta su Sciusciu and Punta Florisa). Being the lowest of them, Punta Paulinu compensates for this lack of height with its wilder nature. Unlike the other peaks, the summit requires some simple climbing and is located right in the center of the ridge. It therefore offers a beautiful panoramic view of the four nearby mountains.

Bruncu Spina, with its 1,829 metres, is the second highest peak in Sardinia after Punta La Marmora which reaches 1,834 metres. The view from here is stunning. Getting to the top is mostly on non-technical terrain that you can run on without any problems.

7월 23, 2023, Summit Cross of Punta La Marmora
The cross of Punta La Marmora, Punta della Croce, is not exactly the highest point, as it is mistakenly believed. In fact, it is actually a little further along the crest. The summit takes its name from General Alberto Della Marmora but the original name is Punta Perdas Crapias. It was named in his memory in 1901. The current cross was placed in 1998.

We did the tour in July. Although it was over 30°C on the coast, the temperature was a pleasant 24°C due to the altitude. You'll be rewarded for your effort when you get to the top.
