The sheer size of the fortress alone shows that Castelsardo, located some 70 kilometers southwest of Alghero, must have once been very important. In the 12th century, the Doria family – a large noble family from Genoa – had a soft spot for the small settlement overlooking the strait between Sardinia and Corsica. Commissioned by the Maritime Republic of Genoa, they fortified the village, built on a protruding headland, in 1101 and 1102. It was during this period that the name Castel Genovese became established. Due to its strategically important location in the Gulf of Asinara, Castelsardo was always a target of conquerors. It was only in 1448 that the Spanish conquered the town and promptly renamed it Castello Aragonese. The name Castelsardo was chosen by Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia. With the Treaty of London, the city passed to the House of Savoy in 1720.

Two years ago I took my MTB on vacation and went from Valledoria to Castelsardo coast coast…. A challenging route, even though I was not an expert I did it, but slowly and with the beauty of the landscape it repays the effort! On the way back I went through the state road… easier but still a state road!

More than the castle, which is very beautiful, the 360° panoramic view is worth the ticket price.

The Goceano castle (also called Burgos castle) is a very suggestive place. From the top of a granite cliff the castle dominates the nearby village and the valley behind it. It's worth getting up here to enjoy the view.

For less enthusiastic walkers, there is also a road that leads almost up to the top with spacious parking.

It is a medieval fortress, built of local stone in the mid-13th century, during the Visconti period of the Judicato of Gallura, and subsequently used by the Pisans to withstand the attack of the Aragonese. Until 1296, Nino Visconti was judge of Gallura (he was also the last), who used it for military purposes. His daughter Giovanna, who was unable to succeed him, took over his real estate assets, including this castle. The fortress's main role was to defend Civita and the borders with the Judicate of Torres. Originally the castle was equipped with four towers and was characterized by two squares, an upper and a lower one, surrounded by polygonal walls, accessible by stairs made of large granite blocks. In the upper square two ruined rooms are still visible, one of them with a groin vault, a cistern to collect rainwater and the keep, originally divided into four floors and allowing control of the area up to the Gulf of Olbia. Access to the tower was about 6 meters high and was via extendable wooden ladders. In 1339 the castle was entrusted to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. From the second half of the 14th century it was occupied by the Aragonese and then by the Judicate of Arborea. At the beginning of the 15th century there was a final abandonment, which was accompanied by the decline and depopulation of Civita (later Terranova Pausania). Most of the damage the fortress has suffered is due to neglect and neglect over the past few decades, but some is also due to the bombing of the last war. In the years following the conflict, it was also used as a functional structure for the administration of the nearby Olbia-Venafiorita airport. After a tiring climb, the reward is this wonderful view from the tower over the sea. The Pegna tower, historically and officially in Alghero Catalan the "Torre de la Penya", is located near Capo Caccia, built over a sheer cliff over 200 meters high, of Aragonese origin like the nearby towers of Tramariglio and of Buru and Porto Conte. The climb requires safe movement and sturdy shoes.

Three kilometers as the crow flies from the Palazzo di Baldu is the Castle of Balaiana, connected by a path to the Church of San Leonardo, which was originally the castle's chapel. The structure is located on Monte San Leonardo at an altitude of 299 m above sea level and dominates a large part of the territory and the roads that connect the ports to the towns of the Judicate. For this reason, the castle served to defend the internal borders and the surrounding area. The fortress was probably built by Pisan craftsmen in the course of the 11th century on the orders of Giudice Constantin I. This hypothesis is also supported by some structural features; the castle was built entirely of hewn granite blocks and without the use of mortar. The castle is characterized by a trapezoidal tower divided into two rooms, with access on the east side. The presence of aligned stones in the surrounding plain has led to the assumption that there was a ring wall to prevent advances from all directions. The Castle of Balaiana is mentioned in the Condaghe of Bonarcado (first decades of the 12th century and mid-13th century), which reports the clashes between the Giudice of Gallura, Constantine III, and the sons of his predecessor, who occupied the fortress had. It was then given to the monastery of Santa Maria di Bonarcado in 1146 by the barisone of Arborea; their destruction is carried out by the Catalans/Aragonese. Due to the poor state of preservation of the castle, extensive restoration work was carried out at the end of the last century. The view from the tower of the sea, the beach and the coast is magnificent. A "3 towers hike" to Torre Bianca and Torre Negra can be done very well here.

Like the other towers in the area (Torre Bianca and Torre Negra), the Bantine Sale tower, also known as Torre Mozza, was built by Philip II to defend himself from Saracen incursions. Of the three, this is the worst preserved and is now in ruins, probably due to the early abandonment in the 17th century.
