In the meantime, the wooden works of art have moved out (to Mittweida) and the city of Lichtenstein is converting the whole thing into a central urban cultural center. The Wasserburg Abtei Thierfeld, also called Wal or Ehrlerinsel, is an abandoned moated castle in the north of Thierfeld in Saxony. It is also popularly known as "Ehrlerinsel" or "Wal" (a regional name for the medieval castle type Motte (tower hill castle)). The moated castle complex, which came into the possession of the existing Grünhain Cistercian monastery between 1230 and 1536, is located off the village street in upper Thierfeld. Finds of potsherds that cannot be dated before the 14th century and are now in the Stein Castle Museum indicate that the castle complex was built by the Grünhainer monks. The manor next door and an area with several properties are still called "abbey" today. The castle site today shows the still water-filled ring pond of the island complex, the drained larger western pond and the wall perimeter.
