Definitely cycle along the canal. You are only in nature

The former canal port of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in Neumarkt is now home to the Neumarkt River Master's Office of the Regensburg Water Management Authority. The site is not open to the public. However, the cycle path runs along the side of the canal basin so that it and the preserved old harbor crane can still be seen today. Source: LMDK Administration

Actually, the canal is a listed building.

The basic processes serve both to dry out individual canal sections for maintenance work and to regulate the water level during normal operation.

Bottom outlets are used to regulate water levels, particularly to drain excess sewer water. This water is then fed into nearby bodies of water. See information panel for further information.

The old Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, conceived by King Ludwig I as a navigable connection between the Danube and the Main, was a technical masterpiece of the 19th century, but never an economic success, because the railway quickly replaced the waterway as a transport connection for goods and commodities. Today, the old canal, which is still largely preserved in its historical size and with several locks between Beilngries in the Altmühl Valley and Nuremberg, is the epitome of every cyclist's dream.
