The existence of this fortified castle is mentioned as early as the 12th century. It is believed to have been built on an even older fortress. In 1764, the Château de Saint-Alban was requisitioned as headquarters to organize raids aimed at eliminating the Beast of Gévaudan.

An old stone shelter standing alongside a small chapel, ideal for getting out of the elements or a spot to grab a snack, although it isn't set up for sleeping in. There is a fountain with drinkable water and toilets just a few metres away.

Saint-Roch is the most represented saint on the paths of Saint-Jacques. He is the patron saint of pilgrims. His story is tragic. Suffering from the Black Death, he warns passers-by that he is contagious by pointing with his finger to a bubo on his left thigh. He is always represented accompanied by his little dog who is in charge of bringing him food. The statues of Saint-Roch are numerous. This one is beautifully made.

The castle of Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole is mentioned as early as the 12th century. During 1764, the castle of Saint-Alban became one of the gathering points to organize the hunts to eliminate the animal of Gévaudan. This castle was converted into a psychiatric hospital in 1821 with the arrival of Joseph Tissot, said Brother Hilarion, whose calling was to serve the insane. The hospital is known for the quality of its care. The castle currently houses the tourist office and temporary exhibitions. However, the interior of the castle cannot be visited.

The highest point of the entire French Jokobsweg is at 1304 m at the St-Roch chapel. From here you have a beautiful view of Lozère.
