The Fonte Gala, Fountain of Joy, on the high side of the Campo is so called because of the exuberant joy at its official opening in 1348. In 1419 marble panels by Jacopo della Quercia were added, which were replaced by copies in 1868; the originals are in Santa Maria della Scala.
