The old town of Saarburg with the castle, the church, the mill museum and the waterfall is definitely a magnet for visitors, at least in the summer months. Unfortunately, the old town is usually flooded with tourists on the weekends.

In my opinion, the left bank is the prettier. The one on the right, however, allows a detour to Montclair Castle

From the Saar loop it is actually nice, before that it is rather uninspiring. And the loop is really nice, even if you've seen it so often in pictures ... If you don't want to cycle up the mountain, there is a hiking trail straight from the river.

You just have to climb the old rock to enjoy the view ...

The circular hiking trail leads past the foot of the Altfels. If you want, you can climb it with the help of steel ropes and steps carved into the rock. Due to the shortness of the steep climbing section and the thick steel cables, it wasn't particularly difficult. However, one should be free from fear and anyway be careful. Slipping would be fatal. I had another visitor, who had climbing gear, explain to me that some of them got a whack when they descended.
