One of Canada's most famous locations, Lake Louise (known in the Stoney Nakoda language as Ho-run-num-nay, meaning “Lake of the Little Fishes”) shines with its glacier-fed turquoise waters. The lake serves as a base for hiking, summer canoeing, and winter skiing. With limited parking and shuttle options required during peak season, planning ahead will turn a visit into a memorable encounter with one of the Rockies’ most iconic landscapes. As others have mentioned, it does get very busy, so arriving early is a great way to beat the crowds and enjoy a bit of solitude along the shoreline.

A wonderful place to visit, it's currently easier to access by vehicle (to a certain extent) and with parking. However, if you're someone who enjoys climbing mountains over 4,000 meters from the bottom, I'm sure you'll love the challenge. Don't forget that these are mountains, and weather changes can happen at unexpected times, so it's best to be prepared for anything, bringing hydration and food necessary for the effort and the weather. In the craters, you'll find two bodies of fresh water that form the Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna. In the 1990s, you could dive at altitude in the icy waters. Visibility is very low, so it was done with instruments and good orientation, a dry suit, or a wetsuit for icy waters. Currently, only research personnel can do so with a special permit, as it is an ecological and archaeological reserve. Admission is fee-based, and on weekends, it's very crowded, so be patient and always respect the place. Leave it better than you found it, and enjoy! You can also get there by gravel bike or mountain bike, but achieving this requires good training due to the incline and altitude. Always remember: Respect the Mountain.

Athabasca Falls is located on the Icefields Parkway, Alberta's Highway 93, at km 203 (towards Lake Louise to Jasper) at the junction with Highway 93A (which is normally closed from November to April). The mighty Athabasca River originates from the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield. At the foot of Mount Kerkeslin, the Athabasca River plunges over a jagged cliff of Precambrian quartzites into a narrow canyon of its own making. https://www.worldwaterfalldatabase.com/waterfall/Athabasca-Falls-2576 Some information on geology at page 102 of: http://parkscanadahistory.com/geology/misc-report-6-1963.pdf

On the way from Banff to Jasper at the end of May 2018, we stopped at Lake Louise. The wonderful location and proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway attracts numerous visitors. Mountain lakes with a connection to a road are often an attraction. Nevertheless, Lake Louise remains well remembered for the striking massif of Fairview Mountain.

Lake Louise is the name of the lake, but also of the town, the ski area and the luxury hotel that is over 100 years old. At this highlight you are very close to the lake shore and have one of the best photo perspectives. The high peaks of the Rocky Mountains are often beautifully reflected in the light blue water.

The path from the campsite along the stream to the lake was beautiful, as was the path to the lookout point. But the lake itself was far too crowded. The only thing to do was to get away as quickly as possible.
