This view is unparalleled and makes hikers pause in awe on the summit of the Gläserberg. No tree, no bush obscures the view from the bare mountaintop, which greets visitors from afar. Anyone who has managed the climb to the 671-metre-high Gläserberg is rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view. A panorama that stretches far beyond the borders, with the Wartburg (34 km) in the north, the Schneekopf (47 km) in the east, the Heidelstein (26 km) in the south and the Rößberg (14 km) in the west at the hiker's feet. A beautiful spot on earth, which was sung about in the Gläserlied long ago with the words: "Happy hikers will flock from all over the wide Rhön to look out into the distant lands from your proud heights!" We have already cycled on many cycle paths and for us the Werra cycle path is one of the most beautiful.

The Bernshauser Kutte is a small, circular karst sinkhole lake and a geological feature worth protecting. A very narrow, sometimes slippery path leads around it.

The mountain hut location has an eventful history. The destruction after the Second World War and the long years of being in a restricted area meant that the Gläserberg and Dermbacher Hütte lived on for almost 50 years only in the memories of the locals in the surrounding areas. All the better that the new log cabin has been crowning the summit since 1994 and invites you to stop by on Sundays and public holidays.

A narrow path runs around the lake. Very narrow in places. Sturdy shoes and surefootedness are helpful! But the lake is worth going around. A great piece of nature!

The Pleß had been a princely hunting area for a long time when the hunting lodge “Pleßhaus” was built approx. 1 km north of the summit in 1866/67 and this later developed into a popular restaurant for excursions. In 1921 the first wooden observation tower was built on the summit. It became dilapidated and was replaced by a stone tower in 1936 (Wiki).

The Bernshauser Kutte measures 250 m in diameter, the water level is at a height of (383.6 m above sea level) and is sunk up to 40 m deep into the middle red sandstone. It belongs to a group of sinkhole ponds between Urnshausen and Roßdorf, which were created by the collapse of cavities in the underground Zechstein Salinar (Wiki).

The Pleß is a 645.4 meter high Rhönberg in the Salzunger Werraberglang in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. It was originally called Bleßberg. Since there was another mountain of the same name in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen, Duke George II ordered it to be renamed Pleßberg at the end of the 19th century to avoid confusion. A little later, the additional -berg was dropped. The first observation tower on the Pleß was built in 1921. The so-called "Pleßturm" collapsed in 1934. Its successor was built in 1936 in a more stable design, but this tower also only existed until 1963. From 1962 onwards, the entire area was declared a military restricted area of the GDR, which meant that maintenance of the tower was no longer possible and it was demolished. The third tower has been standing since 1999, this time made of sand-lime brick and now with a facade made of titanium zinc sheet. From the 20-meter-high viewing platform, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Thuringian Forest, the Rhön and the Hessian Kegelspiel. The view also extends along the Werra past the Wartburg near Eisenach to the Hohen Meißner. In 1996, the municipality of Breitungen acquired the area around the Pleß and has had its own local mountain ever since. Ditches between the Pleß and the Stoffelskuppe bear witness to the fact that this was once the border between Thuringia and Franconia in the Middle Ages. The massive observation tower on the Pleßberg, the local mountain of the Breitunger with a height of 644 meters, which was rebuilt in 1999, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. From the approximately 22 meter high platform of the Pleßturm, on a clear day, you have an excellent panoramic view of the Thuringian Forest with its highest elevation, the Grosser Beerberg, the Dolmar near Kühndorf, the Wartburg, the Hohen Meißner, the Hohe Geba and the nearby mountains of the Rhön, such as the Oechsenberg and the Dietrichsberg near Vacha. Staying in the tower is somewhat mystical when the wind whistles with great force over the summit. The "tower noises" then remind you of one or another story from the fairy tales and legends of days gone by. The magic of the "witches' procession" on Walpurgis Night can literally be felt. Duke George II of Saxony-Meiningen also seemed to be enchanted when he drew the witches' procession, which originally adorned the theater duke's hunting lodge, which stood in a clearing below the mountain. Today we can find a copy on the foundation of the previous tower. The tower and hiking hut invite you to take a rest. They are looked after by the Rhönklub Breitungen branch on weekends, Saturday from 1 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. On weekdays, a tower key can be picked up from the Breitungen tourist information office against a deposit.
