The mountain is located in the western part of the Eichsfeld district near the state border with Hesse. Viewed clockwise, it lies between the small towns of Asbach-Sickenberg in the south and south-west, Dietzenrode-Vatterode in the west and north-west, Mackenrode and Henningerode in the north-east. The nearest cities are Bad Sooden-Allendorf (Hessen) (4 kilometers to the south-west) and Heilbad Heiligenstadt (Thuringia) (about 12 km to the north-east). The Wanfried Agreement in 1945 led to a shift in the American-Soviet zone border and with it the later Thuringian-Hessian state border. This is how the towns of Asbach-Sickenberg, Vatterode, Weidenbach and the associated mountain came to Thuringia. The mountain is therefore not part of the historic Eichsfeld. The inner-German border ran south of the mountain and can still be seen at the Schifflersgrund border museum near Asbach-Sickenberg.

The locals like to call the graduation tower in Bad Sooden-Allendorf the vertical North Sea because of the very salty air here, which is particularly beneficial for people with respiratory problems. The system was originally built to increase the salt concentration in the brine trickling down the brushwood. This made the subsequent salt production in the neighboring boiling houses easier and cheaper. It was only much later that the health-promoting effects of brine were recognized. In 2002 the graduation tower was completely rebuilt. It is the core of the spa area in the Sooden district. Immediately next to it are the Werratal Therme, several parks and the historic half-timbered houses of Sooden.
