The Kop van Schouwen[2] is a Natura 2000 area (area number 116) in the 'dunes' category on the western side of Schouwen-Duiveland between Burgh-Haamstede and Renesse in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Since 1978, the area has been designated as a protected natural monument and since 1988 as a state natural monument. The nature reserve consists of dunes (Meeuwenduinen, Zeepeduinen, Verklikkerduinen, Vroongronden), beaches, grasslands, forests (the largest forest in Zeeland in the Westerschouwen forestry district) and dune lakes. The dunes in the Kop van Schouwen alternate with special dune grasslands, moist dune valleys and sea buckthorn thickets where many plant species can be found. In the east lie flat 'vroongronden': species-rich grasslands that humans have used for centuries to graze livestock. The diverse landscape is an important habitat for many protected species, such as the natterjack toad, the viviparous lizard, and the spotted white-faced dragonfly, as well as the blue sea holly, the stonechat, and the goshawk. The wet dune areas provide habitat for the northern vole. Kentish plover, little ringed plover, and ringed plover breed on Verklikkerstrand. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kop_van_Schouwen
